A few weeks back I played some Schumann on a crooked rotary horn I have from the 19th century Viennese maker Leopold Uhlmann. This is another instrument by him and plays really quite differently. The silver plated instrument is a little tougher than this one, it’s great to play but its quite slippery. I particularly like the offset valves. I think this instrument could be earlier than the other instrument, but given that Uhlmann was active from round about 1830s till the 1870s without any other information it’s hard to say anything other than roughly mid 19th century.
I wanted to play something mid 19th century and Viennese on this horn and am deeply indebted to the horn scholar John Humphries who shared with me two Salon pieces by Rudolph Schachner (1816 - 1896). These two pieces were published in Vienna in the mid 1840s so are a nice partner to this particular horn. This is the first of the two pieces entitled Le Regret or Die Sehnsucht.
