Wally K. Daly's BBC Radio play "Time Slip" is a farcical sci-fi comedy that delves into the bewildering consequences of human replication.
The story centers on Paul (played by Paul Daneman), who comes home one evening to tell his wife, Fay (Norma Ronald), about a groundbreaking experiment at his workplace: the ability to replicate human beings. Shortly after, the "original" Paul goes upstairs, and a second Paul (Paul 2, also played by Daneman) enters, behaving in precisely the same manner as the first.
This sets off a chain of increasingly absurd and confusing events. Complications multiply when the two Pauls encounter each other, leading to a comedic clash of identities. The confusion is further amplified when it's revealed that Paul's best friend, Frank (Donald Hewlett), has also undergone the same replication process.
What starts as a quirky scientific anomaly quickly escalates into utter pandemonium. For instance, when the "real" Paul and Frank go to the pub, their duplicates remain at home, only to decide to go to the pub themselves, causing considerable consternation for the bewildered pub landlord.
The play culminates in a hilarious and chaotic bridge game, where the replicated Pauls and Franks are programmed to eventually fade away and explode. This leaves the "real" husbands to be reunited with their distraught wives, but not without a final, lingering question: are these truly the original husbands, or are they also copies?
"Time Slip" plays on the concept of the divided self and the potential dangers of scientific interference with human identity, all wrapped in Wally K. Daly's characteristic comedic style.
