#Preah Enkosei (mid 10th century)
Preah Enkosei is the only Siem Reap-period temple located in modern Siem Reap. It was built in the mid 10th century by a high-ranking Brahmin named Divakarabhata who married the daughter of Rajendravarman II (r. 944-968). The temple comprises two sanctuaries placed side-by-side, with the central sanctuary on-axis with the east gopura. The symmetry of the site suggests that a third tower was part of the original design, but it was either never completed or totally destroyed (the lack of any foundation stones suggest the former).
In keeping with 10th century precedent the temple is built almost entirely of brick with a handful of sandstone features such as pediments and door jambs. The main object of interest is the pediment on the larger sanctuary that depicts Indra on his mount Airavata. Although the Indra image is now missing (possibly due to vandalism) the pediment is in otherwise remarkable condition despite its ten centuries in the open environment. Above the Indra/Airavata pair is a frieze depicting the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
