Speech or language impairment means a communication disorder, such as stuttering, impaired articulation, a language impairment, or a voice impairment, that adversely affects a child's educational performance.The three types are: Articulation disorders, Fluency disorders and Voice disorders.
Speech and language disabilities is a common disability and it is estimated that 5% to 10% of people in the U.S. have a communication disorder. By the first grade, about 5% of U.S. children have a noticeable speech disorder. About 3 million U.S. adults struggle with stuttering and about 1 million U.S. adults have aphasia.
Elementary learners with a speech and language disability can learn and succeed at school. With strategies and tips such as using visual aids, pictures and images, speaking directly to our elementary learner directly, being patient, using actual objects to communicate and using gestures, they can succeed and make strides in their learning.
