Is bad sound killing your videos? In Vlog #2 David shares four ways you can overcome common audio problems. Comment and let us know the worst sound issues you've faced when making your videos (we've all been there....repeatedly!)
What would we do without sound? Sound in a video is not just the dialogue, it’s the atmospheric sounds, sound effects, and music. We use sound to heighten the mood and even give information about the plot, location, and the characters of the story. Sound is a crucial part of any film and it is often overlooked by new filmmakers!
Poor sound can easily ruin a production, no matter how good the visuals are if the audio is bad, the audience simply won’t continue watching it. It’s the worst feeling when you get to the edit and realize the sound just isn’t up to scratch, as new filmmakers we’ve all been there!
There are many factors that could be contributing to bad quality audio, but to start off I have listed my top four ‘sound enemies’ and how to avoid them.
Enemy #1: Hairspray!
Hairspray is the biggest microphone enemy – ever. If you’ve got hairspray being applied near or on your microphone, then your sound is toast. Hairspray is an aerosol adhesive and if this sticks to the grill of your microphone, whether its a boom or a lapel mic, the sound is going to be blocked and the microphone ruined. If you see your hair & makeup team coming at your talent with hairspray, be quick to cover that mic up!
Enemy #2: Wind
An uncovered microphone in an outdoor setting is never a good idea. The best option is to use a windsock. It’s something you slip over the microphone (it looks a little bit like a furry animal) and all the fibres absorb the noise to help keep it off the grill of your mic. Every brand of microphone should have one and they doesn’t cost much. So invest in a windsock sooner than later!
Enemy #3: Be wary of location sound
If you are shooting outdoors near a flight of stairs, airport, construction site, or main road then location sounds are going to be a big challenge. The best way to combat this is to plan ahead! It’s best to check your location ahead of time on Google maps and see if it is near a highway, a train line, a park, an airport, or a helipad. Being aware of what sounds you will have to contend with is half the battle. Check the best time of day for filming as well to avoid shooting during peak hours or plan shooting in between flights/ train journeys.
Enemy #4: Bad mic placement
Choosing the right mic placement is such a simple tip but so many new filmmakers and vloggers use the cameras in-built microphone or position their mic too far from their subject! Putting your mic on top of your camera means that the mic is 4 -6 feet away from you or your subject. That’s not a massive distance but it’s not close enough to pick up clean sound at a healthy level. Similarly using the internal mic of the camera is a no-go. These microphone are almost always a terrible quality and pick up all that atmospheric noise. The dialogue will be just as loud as the background noise which can sound very messy.
Alternatively, you can mount your mic on a stand, or you can suspend it on a boom pole. You can also use a lapel mic positioned under a shirt, close to the actors’ mouth so you can record a resonant clear sound.
So that’s it! My top four sound enemies! If you enjoyed these videos, or want to learn more about a different topic, leave a comment and subscribe to our channel so that you can see more videos just like this on a regular basis. Thanks for reading!
