Is crowdfunding is just replacing old activities in a more efficient way, or combining old activities into something totally new? In the case of the non-profit microfinance lending platform Kiva, Assistant Professor Bryan Stroube believes a new model has emerged- blending lending with charity giving. An understanding of these subtleties can help platforms build on and play to their strengths and suggest new ways in which platforms can differentiate themselves.
