In the 1930s, Rong Jinxiu (Chen Qiaoen), a lady from a medical family, was murdered while trying to save her teacher Chen Sheng (Jin Jia). Jinxiu took the gold pocket watch left by Chen Sheng and went to Shanghai to find her enemy. On the steamer bound for Shanghai, Jinxiu sheltered Zuo Zhen (Huang Xiaoming), a well-known figure in the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce. The two pretended to be lovers to avoid the revenge. The pocket watch was accidentally taken away by Zuo Zhen. In order to find Zuo Zhen, Jinxiu mistakenly entered the Paramount Ballroom and met her half-sister Mingzhu (Lv Jiarong). The Japanese businessman Maeda Takiichi (Qi Ji) who killed Jinxiu's family also tracked her down to Shanghai. In order to control the entire Shanghai economy, Maeda used means to control Mingzhu. Not only did he let her deal with the Xiang brothers, but he also did all kinds of bad things to Jinxiu. After going through all kinds of hardships, Mingzhu finally realized the importance of family affection and died together with Maeda Taki. Jinxiu and Zuo Zhen finally became a couple.
