A new breakthrough gives robots a natural sense of touch with no extra skins or external sensors required.
Using advanced force sensing and deep learning, this system allows robots to feel where they’re touched, recognize symbols, and even respond to virtual buttons. The result? More natural and flexible human-robot interaction.
Traditionally, tactile sensors and electronic skins have been used to help robots detect physical contact, but these methods can be complex and costly when covering large areas.
By using internal high-resolution joint force-torque sensors instead, Iskandar et al. achieved an intrinsic, full-body sense of touch in a robotic arm.
Through deep learning and artificial neural networks, the robot can sense the location, direction, and magnitude of any force applied to its surface. It can even interpret gestures, like a number drawn on its arm or virtual sliders, creating a more intuitive way for humans to interact with machines.
