OLD BOLSOVER: Bolsover Parish #16 of 16

Описание: For the final parish in Bolsover, we have it’s main town. This is a market town, and the origin of the name is uncertain. It may be derived from “Bula's Ofer” or “Boll's Ofer", respectively the Olde English for “Bull's Ridge” and “Boll's Ridge”. In the 1650s it was referred to as ”Bolsouer”

The seat of the Peverel family, in the 12th century a keep was built. This predated the present castle which was erected in 1613. You’ll find lots of references in and around it to the Cavendish name and two railway lines once served the town.

The major industry of the area used to be coal mining and another significant local employer was a hosiery company. In 2007 it was chosen as the location to shoot the film Summer starring Robert Carlyle and Rachael Blake. Many scenes from the film were filmed on the Castle Estate, which is affectionately known by the residents as the 'Wimps'.

Several famous residents have called this one home in the past, and these include the Heartbeat actor Steven Blakeley, Peter Fidler (explorer, mapmaker, and surveyor of the Hudson's Bay Company), the author Mark Morris, Richard O'Dwyer – computer programmer, creator of TVShack.net, and the longstanding MP Dennis Skinner.

Our trip though the district of Bolsover ends in its principal town. This is OLD BOLSOVER.
