In this video, we introduce Jos de Bijl (Bureau Stroming), who discusses the creation of a European database as part of the SpongeBoost project.
About Jos:
Jos studied Physical Geography at Utrecht University (2005) and has conducted research worldwide on human impacts on natural processes. With experience in ecological design, project leadership, and stakeholder engagement, he has an integral vision of river basins and a passion for connecting people, water, and nature.
About S.P.O.N.G.E:
As a navigation guide, S.P.O.N.G.E brings European data from different databases together and provides a geographical overview of existing sponge projects and measures. These projects and measures all aim to restore or enhance landscapes’ natural water retention (or sponge) capacity.

About #SpongeBoostFaces:
Welcome to #SpongeBoostFaces, a new video series that introduces the people behind the SpongeBoost initiative. Each episode will feature one of our project partners, sharing their experiences, individual achievements, and what they’ve valued most during the first year. They’ll also reflect on what they look forward to as the project moves into its next phase.
About SpongeBoost:
SpongeBoost focuses on developing and promoting innovative restoration measures that enhance the natural water retention capacity of freshwater ecosystems, delivering multiple environmental and community benefits. The project combines knowledge-sharing, practical restoration, and adaptive land-use planning to create effective strategies for resilient landscapes. Through collaboration with communities and stakeholders, SpongeBoost aims to support climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity goals across Europe.
