In today’s Gospel, Jesus goes up the mountain and begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes. These words are not a simple moral program, nor an automatic system of cause and effect. They reveal the blessedness of those who receive the Kingdom of Heaven as a gift and allow grace to transform their lives. This reflection invites us to see the Beatitudes as the portrait of Christ and the path of the disciple: poverty of spirit, meekness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, hunger for righteousness, and fidelity in persecution. True happiness is not found in power, possession, or recognition, but in belonging to God and letting Christ become the measure of our joy.
