Описание: I review Michel Houellebecq's feather-ruffling, bombastic novel 'Submission' wherein the disheveled misanthrope addresses the stagnation at the center of French society. In a rebuttal to the secular humanism of the West, Houellebecq proposes an alternative reality, one where the democratically-elected Islamic Party ushers in a new regime in France which leads to radical social transformation. The story of this New France is told through the lens of a typical Houellebecqian protagonist named Francois, a middle-aged anti-hero professor at the Sorbonne in Paris. Francois' life, and the social landscape of Paris and the West at large, undergoes several huge changes under the new regime, as he is affected by laws regarding education funding, pension, polygamy, arranged marriage, and potential for an actual purpose in his otherwise detached, empty life. Once again Houellebecq has disrupted the status quo and has made all of the right people angry while delivering an incisive, and even endearing, piece of literature.
