Officers shot an armed man in Denver's Cole neighborhood Thursday night, the police department said.
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said they received a report just after 6:20 p.m. of a person armed with a handgun in the alley behind Annunciation Catholic School in the 3500 block of North Humboldt Street.
Thomas said when officers responded, they contacted a man who matched the description they were given and saw that he had a handgun.
They repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, Thomas said, but he refused. He said after several minutes of trying, the man made a threatening gesture that put officers in fear of being shot.
Officers fired multiple rounds, Thomas said, and they struck him several times.
Thomas said officers took the man's weapon away and provided first aid before he was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and was in critical condition.
The man has not been identified. Thomas said he did not know whether anyone was inside the school at the time.
DPD will conduct a multi-agency investigation with members of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Colorado State Patrol, Thomas said, and their findings will be presented to the Denver District Attorney's Office for review.
