BRENDA: Hi, my name is Brenda Prudhom and I am the President of Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID).

CHRIS: Hi, my name is Chris Wagner and I am the President of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

BRENDA: The two organizations, NAD and RID, have had a historic partnership which has led to a combined certification for interpreters and code of professional conduct.

CHRIS: We want to improve on this partnership to advance the rights of deaf and hard of hearing people and enhance the sign language interpreting profession.

BRENDA: We want to involve deaf and hard of hearing people in RID.

CHRIS: And we want to involve sign language interpreters in the NAD.

BRENDA: To achieve this vision for a stronger partnership, the two organizations had a heart to heart discussion.

CHRIS: We agreed that it was time for a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the NAD and RID, and we wanted to share our new understanding with you.

BRENDA: With this MOU, the NAD and RID commit to continuing the exchange of information of interest to and that have an impact on both organizations.

CHRIS: Both organizations are exploring dual membership options where individuals can join to become members of both organizations.

BRENDA: We want to determine the best way to oversee administration of the NAD-RID Certification and Code of Professional Conduct.

CHRIS: We are looking at developing an autonomous decision-making structure for the certification program.

BRENDA: The NAD and RID are working closely together to identify ways to have cross representation on our respective committees.

CHRIS: This way, deaf people will have a say in the development of policies and practices with respect to interpreters, and interpreters will contribute to preserving, protecting and promoting the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people.

BRENDA: The MOU does not cover all issues, but is a beginning for our partnership.

CHRIS: The NAD and RID will develop agreements on some of the more complex issues such as financial and legal oversight over certification, and such agreements are outside the scope of this MOU.

BRENDA: We are confident that the MOU establishes a stronger partnership that will help both organizations address the many challenges facing interpreters and deaf and hard of hearing people.

CHRIS: We know that many people are anxious to know more details, please check the NAD and RID websites for a copy of the unsigned MOU. We will have a public signing of the MOU at the RID National Conference in Indianapolis in August 2013.

BRENDA: We are looking forward to working together for everyone!

CHRIS: Likewise.
