The Odyssey Is a Map. Here's Where It Leads.

Описание: Ahead of Christopher Nolan's cinematic epic "The Odyssey" hitting theaters and IMAX screens this week, we are looking past the Hollywood visual effects to find the ground truth: the locations in Homer's epic are real, and the ancient historians told us exactly where to find them.

Before the movie's release date this weekend, retrace the actual historic route. In Part 2 of our series on the Odyssey's geography, we follow the ancient geographer Strabo stop-by-stop; from the ruins of Troy to Calypso's hidden island; and test every mythical location against primary texts and modern scientific data.

We cover:

The Lotus Eaters: A real people (the Lotophagi) on a real island—Djerba, Tunisia, per Herodotus and Strabo.

The Cyclops in Sicily: Homer's sailing directions, Thucydides' corroboration, and where the "one eye" actually came from.

Aeolus and the Bag of Winds: How real meteorological knowledge gets remembered as a god.

The Cimmerians: The real people Homer placed at the gates of Hades, located in ancient Assyrian records.

Scylla and Charybdis at the Strait of Messina: A real whirlpool, a real swordfish hunt, and the one mathematical number Homer got wrong.

Ogygia: The island Strabo couldn't solve. Calypso's sailing directions, the raft math, and a trail of evidence pointing to North Africa and a green Sahara.

I'm Curtis Holland. I study ancient history, ancient texts, and human symbolism through a scientific and first-principles lens. No hype, no aliens, no agenda. Just the primary sources, the hard data, and the questions nobody seems to ask.
