But the recent claims are quite odd and eerie. A gadget fan has claimed that Facebook is listening through his microphone!
But how? And why? And how much of this is true?

Facebook is an American online social media and social networking service owned by Meta Platforms. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, its name comes from the face book directories often given to American university students.

User @sheafast claimed that her app began showing her ads for oat milk after she discussed the dairy alternative with a wholesaler

She added that, later that night, she went home and her Facebook app was suddenly “filled” with adverts for oat milk.

It already knows a lot about you, your liking, your choices etc through your browsing data and profile information to target specific ads to your profile.

It is very likely that @shefast, being a coffee shop owner, has searched a lot about things related to coffee and thus the targeted ads were shown to her. Many of her internet searches and the websites she visits will likely be related to coffee.

Privacy researchers, computer scientists, technology journalists, and many other experts have been sniffing around on this front and found no solid evidence of any wrongdoing. Ads that you think are coming from your conversations just show how smartly the advertising is done.

It also shows us how far technology has reached as of 2022.
You're still giving Facebook so much information that they don't need to snoop on your real-life conversations.
Advertisers may use data acquired from your activity across the web, across many devices, indeed if you aren't logged into Facebook or other services.

Thus it might be a rumour like the other ones which claimed that the social media giant has been sneaking on its users through their gadgets.

And such rumours have already seen a decline in the people’s interest in similar matters. Therefore people are less likely to believe in such impractical data.

There have been multiple news/ stories about websites stealing your data for targeted email spam, fraudulent calls and stuff like that but it's always the junior companies that get caught by authorities.

If Mark Zuckerberg doesn't want to close down his own company, then it's unlikely that Facebook would be listening to your real-life conversations.
Another relatively intriguing fact that might amaze you is that Facebook is trying to shift all its underlying companies to the newer web, which is known as web3.

As it seems, the web3 technologies use blockchain technology which is like a ledger that stores all the data openly and is decentralized, where no one has control over the data and it's the users who are the owners of the app.

Therefore, companies like Facebook would never risk spoiling their company profile by making it visible to its entire users about its spying plays and would never make the spied data open.
