Sooo.. which one of these glass plates were your favorite? I'm very happy with them all, but I really love the flip cup.
This video is the perfect example of why I love fluid art. You can use the same colors in multiple pours, but get wildly different results depending on the technique and how you layer the cup. Controlled chaos - I love it!
Here are my Keys to Success for pouring on glass:
1. CLEAN the glass with dish soap and warm water first, and once it's dry, go over it again with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. Any residual oils from your fingers or anything that the glass has come in contact with can leave 'gaps' where the paint refuses to stick. And don't forget to clean your hands before touching the glass again!
2. If you're pouring on a flat surface, like a mirror or something similar, tape it onto something you can grip easily (like a canvas or flat piece of wood) so that you're not touching the edges of the glass and potentially leaving fingerprints.
3. If you're pouring onto something curved, like a vase, bowl, plate or Christmas ornament, make sure it is elevated above the table. I usually use a large cup, or a pencil stuck in styrofoam or floral foam for ornaments - eraser side up to help steady the ornament. Elevating your vase, plate, etc. will allow the paint to flow and drip off smoothly, and give you a way to move it without disturbing the painted surface.
4. The paint on curved, smooth surfaces (like the plates I used here) get very thin - a lot of the paint drips off. You're going to lose a lot of the outer edges. This is normal. So as you're pouring, the part that comes out of the cup last will be the most visible.
5. I like to use a base coat. It gives me greater control of my composition and allows the paints to spread evenly on a wet surface. You can absolutely use paint - I opted to use just plain Floetrol. It serves the same purpose, but it has no color, so I had no worries about the base coat coming through my poured paints as they stretch super thin. You can also thin your Floetrol down with distilled water - but no more than 25%.
6. Thicker consistency paints work best. Again, these paints are stretching super thin on the surface, and you want high pigment density. Thinner consistency paints muddy and blend too much. I've played around several times with Dutch Pours on glass and it never works. (Let me know if you've had a different experience - I'd love to learn I'm wrong about this!)
7. If you're pouring on a vase or anything with a concave center... you MUST tilt out as much of this as possible or it will crack. You can also remove some of the paint with a syringe or even scoop it out with a spoon. But don't leave a big puddle - it takes FOREVER to dry and the final result is never good.

I'm just realizing that I haven't done a tutorial yet on Funnel Pours... I'll get on that. Haha!
Colors used:
Amsterdam Titanium White
DecoArt 24K Gold
Amsterdam Greenish Blue
Artist's Loft Metallic Cobalt Blue
Amsterdam Crimson
Atelier A2 Quinacridone Red Violet Hue
My pouring medium is Mix Pour. You can order it from Krista by emailing her at [email protected].
I mixed my paints 6 parts Mix Pour to 1 part paint. I did not add any water.
I used Floetrol as my basecoat - no additives and no water.
Thanks again for stopping by - I hope to see you here again soon!
