With the release of this all new CX-9, the journalists are lined up to take one for a drive. We didn’t want to wait, and luckily we know some people - so we were able to get our hands on one for this special first look. We got enough time with the car to form some initial impressions, and since the car is just hitting showrooms now - we’re happy to share them with you!
Ever since it was introduced in 2007, the Mazda CX-9 has been one of the most critically acclaimed SUV’s in its class, combining good looks and value with incredible interior space, three rows of seats and sports-car like driving dynamics. Since day one, however, it was always a joint project with Ford, sharing the same body as many Ford SUV’s and the 3.7-Liter V6 from Ford as well. That’s one of the things that makes this CX-9 so important for Mazda - this one is all theirs.
It’s also the first time they have offered a Skyactiv-Turbocharged engine, with the release of the new CX-9’s 2.5-Liter 4-cylinder gas direct-injected power plant. The engine cranks out a very respectable 227hp (250hp on premium gas), and more importantly 310 lb-ft of torque. Torque is what gets a car going from a stop, and despite being lighter than the previous version, this is still a large vehicle. All that torque makes it feel very fast off the line, and helps in around town situations. The new turbo engine probably doesn’t have quite the top-end power of the outgoing 6-cylinder, but in trade you get an impressive 22-city 28-highway MPG.
Also impressive about this car is how it feels. Despite being 190lb lighter in FWD form, and 282lb lighter in AWD, it manages to feel heavier and more solid on the road. At the same time, the handling is lighter and it feels more nimble. It feels more grown up, more German, and that’s a good thing.
Styling-wise, this completes the full lineup of Mazda vehicles incorporating the Kodo-design philosophy, and it looks distinctively Mazda, while at the same time extremely refined. The new grill is powerful and makes a bold statement. Around the rear, there’s almost a Jaguar-like look to the taillights and chrome accents. Overall, it’s just a great-looking SUV.
That carries over inside as well, with some beautiful material choices. The wood inserts look as if they have been carved from a single block, and there are subtle aluminum-trim elements throughout. The brown leather of our test vehicle may not be for everyone, but the seats are supportive and comfortable, and available in other colors if you like.
Technology and safety are key features these days for Mazda, and the new CX-9 is full of them - with a larger center LCD display, heads-up display that projects useful information on the windscreen to keep your eyes on the road and a full suite of safety aids, including lane assist, lane-departure warning, braking assist, and radar-cruise control to name a few. There’s adaptive lighting, automatic high beams, and many others. We didn’t have enough time with the car to really evaluate these systems fully, but keep looking for our full review in the coming months.
In the meantime, take advantage of the fact that these are just hitting showrooms and go schedule a test drive. We think you’ll like it.
