Is Shirk intrinsically evil or only evil and forbidden because of what it leads to?
Shirk in itself is the worst sin. It is not simply evil because of the horrendous and evil acts it often inevitably and inexorably leads to. It is a great blasphemy in its own right: it's an insult to the Creator, and its a humiliation and embarrassment for us as humans too.
Yes it can lead to Khurafaat, immorality and oppression too, because if you don't worship Allah you will worship someone or something else knowingly or unknowingly. It can be the priest who represents the idols, it can be ideologies like radical liberalism and feminism etc. As Martin Luther King said: "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything!
So it is worth bearing in mind that shirk in itself is also disgusting, and not simply reprehensible in view of what it leads to.
