The defense stands up and tells the jury they have the wrong man. This is the full closing argument in the Paul Caneiro quadruple murder trial.
Defense attorney Monika Mastellone spends over three hours walking the jury through what she calls a case built on tunnel vision. She starts with the family Paul loved, the uncle who treated his brother Keith's children like his own, the man every friend and neighbor described as calm, caring, and levelheaded. Then she tears apart the state's financial motive, arguing Paul was not desperate for money and was actually weeks away from receiving thousands more in disability payments. Watch how she reframes every piece of the state's case.
But the most striking part of this closing is what the defense says police never did. Two neighbors reported two unidentified men outside Paul's house at 4:30 in the morning. A second pair of jeans in the basement was never tested. Phone extractions were limited to two days. And a third brother whose name keeps coming up was never investigated. Pay attention to how Mastellone builds the list of what's missing, because that list is long.

📖 CASE BACKGROUND
November 20, 2018: Firefighters found Keith Caneiro, 50, shot five times on his front lawn. Inside the burning mansion: his wife Jennifer, 45, and children Jesse and Sophia, all stabbed. The children died from smoke inhalation.
Hours earlier, a fire broke out at Paul's home eleven miles away. Prosecutors call it a "ruse" to divert suspicion. The motive: Keith had discovered Paul stealing from their businesses and family trusts, and sent an email cutting off Paul's $225,000 salary the night before.
Paul Caneiro, 59, has been jailed without bail for over seven years. If convicted, he dies in prison.
