To celebrate the release of IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?, we were joined for a panel discussion with the film’s director Ella Glendining, filmmaker, writer and activist Kyla Harris (It’s Personal) and filmmaker Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp) to discuss the provocation of “Using film to tell disabled stories” and celebrate some of the amazing work being made.

Ella Glendining is a disabled writer/director. Is There Anybody Out There? premiered at Sundance 2023, and has won awards including the Silver Horn for the director of a film on social issues at Krakow Film Festival 2023, the prestigious FIPRESCI International Film Critics Prize, and the Bring the Change award at Biografilm Festival 2023. Ella also secured two 2023 BIFA nominations, Best Debut Director – Documentary Feature, and The Raindance Maverick Award. Ella was one of three recipients of the BFI and Chanel Filmmaker awards 2023, celebrating ‘creative audacity’, and was named a BAFTA Breakthrough 2023. Ella is currently writing a historical drama feature she will also direct for the BFI, called Curiosities of Fools.
Kyla Harris (any pronoun) is a filmmaker, writer and activist who applies an intersectional approach to all of her work. She advises and supports inclusivity in the industry, as chair of the Disability Screen Advisory Group for the British Film Institute (BFI) and a British Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) member. They work to integrate the principles of disability justice in their work and regularly gives workshops on the subject. In 2022 they joined the founding members of FWD-Doc as an Advising Member. Her short film It’s Personal, that she co-directed and wrote, was commissioned by the Film Video Umbrella and is their most viewed film to date. She co-created and co-wrote and is starring in a comedy drama series for BBC TWO, due to air this spring.
Jim LeBrecht co-directed and co-produced, with Nicole Newnham, the 2021 Oscar-nominated documentary, Crip Camp which received the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for feature length documentary, the 2021 Independent Spirit award for Best Feature Documentary and a 2021 Peabody Award. He has over 40 years of experience as a film and theater sound designer and mixer, filmmaker, and disability rights activist. LeBrecht is a co-founder of FWD-Doc and the 1in4 Coalition, two organizations that support people with disabilities in the entertainment business. He has been a character consultant for Pixar Animation Studios for 2 of their films. Jim is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He is also a member of the Disability Futures Fellowship, an initiative of the Ford Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
