Hello and welcome!

Today let’s look at autistic community and neurodiversity. Of course, neurodiversity includes individuals labeled with Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, ADHD, s, Autistic Spectrum Condition and others. However, today we focus on how autism-rights movement started and what it entails.

It all started with a famous piece of work like “Don’t Mourn for Us” by Sinclair (an autism-rights movement activist) in the early 1990s. It triggered a wave of disability rights activism and “Nothing about us without us” became its motto.

Neurodiversity views different neurological conditions that medical professionals consider disorders as mere differences. It reinforces the fact that being neurodivergent does not make any individual less worthy. In fact, such an individual can have some unique qualities or talents. Therefore, the neurodiversity movement advocates for the rights of neurodivergent people and while doing so, it applies a framework that values differences and rights such as inclusion and autonomy.

Some autistic people believe that it is about accepting all kinds of individual minds and a holistic acknowledgement of the importance of diversity that helps society survive, progress and innovate. Also, it tries to help families with advocacy for acceptance, understanding and support. This can have a positive impact on autistic people and their parents.

In a nutshell, as far as autism is concerned, neurodiversity further makes us believe that humans in this world are unique, which is also true for other neurodivergent people. That does make sense because generally no two people are the same in this world: they have different personalities and traits. Neurodiversity, in a way, makes people respect the rights of every other individual.

That being said, we still have to look at other aspects of autistic community and neurodiversity movement. So stay tuned.
