WLRN’s Americas editor Tim Padgett explains that the idea President James Monroe first laid out two centuries ago – in reaction to Europe’s colonial actions in the Western hemisphere – has always informed U.S. policy in the Americas.

After it was employed more covertly in the second half of the 20th century, now President Donald Trump has the U.S. following the bad example of the old European monarchies once more, by seizing Venezuela’s oil, lunging for Greenland’s minerals and threatening to retake the Panama Canal.
