The Murder Ballad That Never Quite Happened
A dark ballad about the special relationship between Kinski&Herzog
A Holzkopf Production
Lyrics:
I met him in Munich, nineteen seventy-two
Eyes like a wolf that had chewed through the zoo
He screamed till the neighbors all phoned for the law
I thought: this one’s finished before the next door
But I kept him, Lord help me, I kept him around
A dog with no master, teeth deep in the ground
And the gun was loaded, one round, nickel bright
I carried it nightly into jungle and night
But the hammer stayed back
The river ran on
The bullet slept quiet
The mad dog lived long
I aimed for the heart
God turned my hand
We shot five more pictures
And buried no man
He tore down the set, set fire to the script
Called me a coward, said death was too quick
I found him one morning with rope round his throat
He laughed like a child when I cut through the rope
I carried the weight of his skull in my hands
Thought: one good push and he’s under the sand
But the hammer stayed back
The river ran on
The bullet slept quiet
The mad dog lived long
I aimed for the heart
God turned my hand
We shot five more pictures
And buried no man
Years later he’s gone, one foot in the grave
I walk to the river and still feel the crave
His voice in my skull like a radio wave
Shouting “Werner, you bastard, you never were brave”
I open the drawer where the old gun lies
The chamber’s empty — no need for goodbyes
The hammer stayed back
The river ran dry
The bullet’s still waiting
No reason why
I aimed for the heart
Time turned my hand
We shot all those pictures
And buried no man
… and I still don’t know whether I loved him or whether I just couldn’t pull the trigger.
