I recorded this piece a year ago and wasn't really happy enough with it to post it. Today I decided to record it again and listen to the differences. There are many. Some things have improved or simply changed, while I'm still struggling with others.
The piece is gorgeous, and it took me a while to be able to sing it without my throat closing up at the words 'The flowers I brought I lay aside for passing feet – thou needest nought...'
If anyone wants to see the 'one year ago' version of this, you can find it here: • Autumn Evening | Quilter
Composer: Roger Quilter
Poetry: Arthur Maquarie
Piano: Annette Rogers (Thanks Annette!!)
The yellow poplar leaves have strewn thy quiet mound
Thou slumberest where winter's winds will be unknown
So deep thy rest
Sleep on, my love, thy dreams are sweet
If thou hast dreams
The flow'rs I brought I lay aside for passing feet
Thou needest nought
The grapes are gather'd on the hills
The wood is piled, the songbird gone
The breath of early evening chills
My love, sleep on.
