Описание:
Shell fired at the siege of Mafeking which went through the roof of the Standard Bank. It failed to go off due to a fault in the striker. Manufactured by Krupp.
It is filmed here to show that it was empty and safe (been used as a door stop for 50 years) prior to being posted back to South Africa and a museum.
Much, much later ...
Checked it in at the post office and filled in all the forms (description - "antique empty shell case").
A few days later the police called at 3am. 'Are you the owner of a shell you tried to post to South Africa? The whole of the Peterborough Parcels Office has been evacuated with a bomb scare!' I suppose terrorist bombers write on the forms 'doorstop' and it goes through.
Many inspections and form filling later, it eventually got to South Africa - by sea, the air frieght pilot refused to have it on board his plane.
