The religion of the ancient Celts was deeply connected to nature, tribal identity, and the unseen spiritual world. Rather than worshiping in large stone temples, the Celts often held their rituals in sacred groves, near rivers, lakes, or on hilltops. They believed that natural places were filled with divine power. Their religion was polytheistic, meaning they worshiped many gods and goddesses, each linked to war, fertility, healing, the sun, or the land itself. These deities were often local, with different tribes honoring their own protective gods.
At the center of Celtic religious life stood the Druids, a respected class of priests, judges, and teachers. They preserved sacred knowledge through oral tradition and led important ceremonies, sacrifices, and seasonal festivals such as Samhain and Beltane. The Celts also believed strongly in the Otherworld, a spiritual realm that existed alongside the human world. For them, death was not an end but a transition, and this belief in an afterlife shaped their burial customs and heroic warrior culture.
