🔁 Why do people with dementia repeat themselves — and how can you respond with patience and empathy?
If you’re caring for someone with dementia and they keep asking the same question, telling the same story, or repeating the same action, you’re not alone. Repetitive behaviour is common — but it can be emotionally exhausting for both the person and the caregiver.
I’m Dr O’Donovan, a medical doctor working in dementia care services here in the UK. I’ve also cared for both of my grandmothers who had Alzheimer’s disease, so I understand how challenging these moments can be — both personally and professionally.
In this video, I’ll explain:
What repetition in dementia looks like — from repeated questions to repeated actions
The main causes, including memory loss, emotional distress, and environmental triggers
How to identify patterns and respond in ways that reduce frustration for everyone
Eight practical, evidence-based strategies to help manage repetition while supporting dignity and emotional wellbeing
These tips are grounded in clinical evidence and lived experience, so they’re realistic, compassionate, and easy to put into practice.
👇 In the comments:
What kinds of repetitive behaviours have you noticed in your loved one? Have you found anything that helps? I’ll reply where I can to share support and ideas.
