Introduction:
--Thomas writes this poem as as an elegy on Richard West after his death and on common man's death.
--Thomas experiences every one has to die one day standing in a country Churchyard in the evening.
--The country Churchyard is responsible to create elegiac thoughts in poet's mind.
--The main theme is " Death never differentiates between a rich and poor man. The common men never develop good and bad qualities with them. The way of going to luxury also one day riches the country Churchyard. "
Gray has written this poem around 1742.
Body of the Poem :
The Reality of the Graves:
--Thomas looks out at a rural scene standing in the country Churchyard being very away from the city life.
--Alone but happy, he looks that the village has been darkened as if all are dead.
-- All the marks on graves are ruined and unimpressed because poor village folk are buried there.
-- Their tomb graves are only simple and carved roughly.
--The natural abilities of the poor people and the rich people are same then why there is the difference between the graves of poor and rich men.
--The poor men might have received salvation in the graves being respected perhaps in the society, he says no rich man respects them.
--They were valueless and their natural powers and rights were frozen by their high poverty and their innocence and beauty of Souls were destroyed in rural life.
--Their talent was pressed like hidden deserts and jewels at the bottom of the ocean-caves.
--These poor people would have been great scholars, generous national leaders and the greatest poets to shine the world. But they died uselessly.
A Farmer's Story:
--The poet imagines an old farmer named as " hoary headed swain ". The farmer says Thomas is not a poor and a man of noble works who can fit himself in the classes of men. Thomas criticizes rich people with their reality by naming himself ( It means Thomas mentions his own name there. ) but he has been kind towards poor people. Swain says Thomas wanders only, visits the Sun at dawn only, he lies only, he looks continuously at the brook, he thinks only of his fancies like a mad man or a hopeless lover being unfit for world life, he meditates and shows sorrow only and he sees Thomas's funeral procession to a church and no one helps him in his funeral. It means Swain shows Thomas a bad man.
Again the Reality of the Graves:
--The names and dates of the poor people have been written on the graves badly and carelessly. The rich men have written rough verses or consoling Biblical texts on their graves. The graves are decorated with shapeless sculpture so Thomas says all the dead Souls are crying from the graves, if we hear them carefully.
--Thomas talks that there should be the reality between the deaths of poor and rich men.
Reality of Man:
--Thomas says man's money, power and social status will end after death and people will forget him as they don't love a living man. All saints and also emperors will die finally.
-- He says societies are based on caste spirit in which poor man is useless while all are same in God's eyes.
Thomas loves poor men as they are humble, moral than rich men, never think of rich people's criticism and very conscious of rich people's behavior according to him.
--Thomas hopes that rich people will change their behavior towards poor men. Thus through this elegy, Thomas expressed his elegiac thoughts on his friend's death and a common man. He says poor men should be justified.
