Hagop M. Kantarjian, MD, Department Chair, Department of Leukemia, Division of Cancer Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, describes the effect of a generic formulation of imatinib.
Kantarjian says that 80,000 CML patients receive TKIs today and a generic formulation of imatinib could reduce the cost of TKIs to 10% of its current price. However, the oncology community is looking for a significant difference in 5- to 10-year survival in erlotinib and nilotinib compared to generic imatinib.
