Magda Olivero sings the role of 'La vecchia madre' (the old mother) in the only recorded performance of Gian Francesco Malipiero's rare and unique modern opera, L'Orfeide.
7 July 1966, Florence
Conducted by Hermann Scherchen (who died unexpectedly only 5 days after the performance).
L'Orfeide is a unique opera consisting of 3 'parts'. In the 2nd part (sette canzoni - seven songs), each 'song' tells an individual story unrelated to the other six.
In the third song (Il ritorno - the return), a mother is driven mad with distress as she waits for her son to return from war. She descends so deep into insanity that when her son actually returns, she does not even recognize him.
Magda Olivero portrays here the mother's descent into madness. A truly electrifying performance, one of my favorite Olivero moments.
