In this video, we’ll continue our discussion of the consequences of sexism by briefly reviewing how sexism affects women’s careers. We’ll also take a much deeper dive into stereotype threat—another consequence of gender stereotypes and sexism—than we have in the past.
Gender Bias: A broad term reflecting biased perceptions based on gender (e.g., differences in explanations for why men and women succeed, differences in how men and women are evaluated).
Stereotype Threat: The phenomenon whereby people of stereotyped groups perform more poorly on (and also experience more anxiety, have fewer cognitive resources, etc., while engaging in) tasks that are relevant to the stereotype.
Cognitive Load: Having to balance many things in your mind at once (or, equivalently, having fewer cognitive resources).
