20 Unique Businesses Series

Описание: Give someone the finished metal part. Give them the mold too. They still might not make it reliably.

What's missing is the recipe for the material going in, and the knowledge of how it will shrink in the furnace. Get either slightly wrong, and the finished part becomes scrap.

That's the business Ishmohit and Yash break down in this episode: Indo-MIM, a company that makes tiny, complex metal components for cars, aircraft, medical devices and electronics. Industry data cited in its filings ranks it as the largest metal injection molding business by revenue.

The process sounds almost contradictory. Mix metal powder with a binder, inject it like plastic, then debind and sinter it into finished metal. That's how you get components smaller than a fingernail, by the million, without machining most of the original material away.

But the episode doesn't start with Indo-MIM. It starts with a more useful question: what makes engineering "precision" engineering?

A transformer is an engineered product. The small bushing inside it is precision engineering. One competes with China on volume. The other competes on tolerances, process knowledge and the cost of getting it wrong.

This is part of SOIC's 20 Unique Businesses series. The point isn't to hand out stock ideas. It's to learn where a business advantage actually comes from, and whether it shows up in margins, customer behaviour and capital efficiency.

A unique business is not automatically a good business.
A good business is not automatically a good investment.
Price still matters.

SOIC INVESTOR PULSE 2026, PUNE EDITION

The whole SOIC team in one room: Ishmohit, Sarthak, SOIC Research and StockScans. This edition goes deep on new-age manufacturing and precision engineering. Ask your question out loud instead of typing it in the comments.

VALUATION SHEET
Yash built the segment-wise valuation model used in this video. Download it, change the assumptions, and build your own view: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

WHAT WE GET INTO

1. Precision engineering versus ordinary engineering: why a transformer is one business and the bushing inside it is another.
2. Why this sector compounds faster than the rest of Indian manufacturing, and why capability is moving from auto into aerospace and defence.
3. What metal injection molding actually is, and why it wastes so little metal compared with machining.
4. The moat that isn't the machine: hand over the tooling and the difficulty stays with the feedstock.
5. Four reasons the margins have held: OEM qualification cycles, process yield, in-house feedstock, and long customer relationships.
6. Five verticals ranked by margin, and how a consumer-heavy peer's mix shows up in its numbers.
7. From joint venture to full ownership: the 1997 partnership with the then-largest MIM company in the world, and the 2001 buyout.
8. The operating leverage setup: roughly 30% utilisation against capacity near 875 million parts a year, and why sales growth is the number to track.
