Genesis 48–50 closes the book of Genesis with blessings, death, mourning, and a towering statement of God’s providence. Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons—Ephraim and Manasseh—and intentionally crosses his hands, showing that God’s purposes don’t follow human expectations. In Genesis 49, Jacob blesses (and prophetically addresses) his sons, pointing forward to the tribe through whom kingship will come. Then Genesis 50 ends with Jacob’s burial, Joseph’s continued mercy, and one of the most important lines in all of Scripture:
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20)

The story that began with creation ends with a family preserved, a promise still alive, and a clear preview of God’s redemptive plan.

And Genesis 50:20 captures the heart of redemption—God sovereignly turns evil into good—most fully seen at the cross, where the greatest evil became the greatest good for all who believe.
