The Royal Crescent in Bath is a  row of 30 terraced Georgian houses, arranged in a grand sweeping curve overlooking Royal Victoria Park and built between 1767 and 1775 to the designs of John Wood the Younger. It is one of the finest and most iconic examples of Georgian architecture in the United Kingdom and is a Grade I listed building.

The facade stretches 500 feet and is defined by 114 Ionic columns and a harmonious Palladian entablature.While the facade is uniform, the rear of the houses is irregular, revealing how each original buyer employed their own architect for the interiors, resulting in the famed “Queen Anne fronts and Mary-Anne backs” typical of Bath’s town planning.The Crescent is fronted by a “ha-ha”—a ditch that acts as an invisible barrier to preserve uninterrupted views of the park and lawn.

The Queen Anne fronts and Mary-Anne backs is a very clever idea. The architect designed the front facade and then sold individual plots to home owners. Each homeowner would then need to complete the front facade to match. Creating the iconic form we see today.

Interesting facts....

The Crescent is said to be haunted by the ghost of soprano Lady Elizabeth Linley, who lived at No. 11. Legend says a ghostly carriage with four horses carries her and her lover Richard Brinsley through the Crescent at speed, sometimes heard by witnesses along with her singing upstairs.
