In an extraordinary and heart-stirring incident that is believed to be the first of its kind at VPS Lakeshore Hospital, love triumphed over a sudden tragedy when a young couple tied the knot inside the Emergency Department on what was supposed to be their perfect wedding day.

What began as a day of joy for Aavni, daughter of M. Jagadeesh and Jyothi of Muthalassery House, Kommad, Alappuzha, turned into chaos when an early-morning accident left her with severe spinal injuries. A teacher at Bishop Moore School, Cherthala, Aavni was travelling with her cousins Anandu and Jayanam to Kumarakom for her bridal makeup when, at around 3 a.m., their car lost control and rammed into a tree.

Local residents rushed the injured to Kottayam Medical College. As Aavni’s condition required specialised neurological care, she was shifted to VPS Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi around noon. Word of the accident reached the groom, V. M. Sharon, son of Manumon and Rashmi of Thumboli Valappil House and Assistant Professor at KVM College of Engineering and IT, Cherthala. Sharon and his family rushed to the hospital, anxious and devastated.

But amid the fear and uncertainty, both families held on to one hopeful wish — to go ahead with the wedding at the originally planned auspicious time between 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Understanding the emotional significance and after carefully assessing the patient’s condition, the hospital authorities, along with the medical team, agreed to make the rare arrangement. In a remarkable example of compassion, coordination, and humanity, they prepared a small space inside the Emergency Department to ensure the ceremony could be conducted safely.

What happened next moved even the hospital staff. Surrounded by doctors, nurses, and close relatives, the couple exchanged vows in the most unexpected of wedding venues — with monitors beeping gently in the background and medical teams ensuring the bride faced no discomfort. Sharon tied the thali, transforming a moment of pain and shock into one of resilience, unity, and unforgettable love.

The wedding, solemnised in the presence of healthcare professionals, became an emotional moment for many who witnessed it — a reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, hope has the power to shine through.

Speaking about Aavni’s condition, Dr Sudish Karunakaran, Head of Neuro Surgery at VPS Lakeshore Hospital, said:
“Aavni has sustained a serious spinal injury and will require surgery soon. Our team is closely monitoring her, and the necessary surgical intervention will be performed promptly.”

Staff members noted that they had never seen a wedding take place inside the Emergency Department, making the event unprecedented in the hospital's history.

While the couple’s dream wedding venue may have changed, the essence of their union only grew stronger — marked by courage, family support, and the extraordinary compassion of the medical team.
