The Hoover Institution hosts panel discussion "Emerging Technology and Nuclear Non-Proliferation" live from Stanford, part of a series led by former secretary of state George Shultz, whose intention is to learn from our changing world, to map our governance options in response, and to help structure a variety of efforts going forward.
Background:
The existential threat posed by nuclear weapons is unique, and states have continuously managed that risk across decades of profound global change. How might changing global demographics and emerging 21st-century technologies redefine the nature of nuclear weapons proliferation and their use? Panelists will explore potential impacts on nuclear proliferation challenges and on counter-proliferation strategies, and consider the particular risks in the India-Pakistan nuclear standoff.
Panelists:
-Ernie Moniz, co-chair of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, former secretary of energy
-Sam Nunn, Hoover Institution Distinguished Visiting Fellow, co-chair of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, former U.S. Senator for Georgia and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee
-Ashley Tellis, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, former senior advisor at the U.S. embassy in New Delhi
Moderated by Elisabeth Paté-Cornell, Stanford University and former member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board
