Tarique Rahman is set to take oath as Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister after leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a sweeping election victory. Breaking tradition, the ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex instead of Bangabhaban, with over 1,200 dignitaries invited.
Key international attendees include Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay. India will be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The UK delegation will include Seema Malhotra, Indo-Pacific Under Secretary. Delegations from Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Malaysia, and Brunei are also expected.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath at 4 pm. In the 13th parliamentary elections, Rahman’s BNP secured 209 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 68. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting.
