Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in 1979 in Upplands Väsby, a suburb of Stockholm. The group is best known for its worldwide hit “The Final Countdown,” which became one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s. Europe’s music blends elements of hard rock, arena rock, and glam metal, featuring powerful vocals, melodic guitar riffs, and memorable keyboard melodies.
The band originally started under the name Force and changed it to Europe in 1982 after winning the Swedish rock competition Rock-SM. The founding members were Joey Tempest on vocals, John Norum on guitar, Peter Olsson on bass, and Tony Reno on drums. Influenced by bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin, they developed a signature sound that mixed melody with hard-edged rock energy.
Europe released their self-titled debut album in 1983, followed by Wings of Tomorrow in 1984, which gained attention in Sweden and Japan. However, their major international breakthrough came in 1986 with the album The Final Countdown. The title track topped the charts in more than 25 countries and became an anthem for a generation. The album’s success turned Europe into one of the biggest rock acts of the decade, leading to world tours and high positions on the Billboard charts.
During the late 1980s, Europe continued their success with albums like Out of This World (1988), featuring the hit single “Superstitious,” and Prisoners in Paradise (1991). However, after years of intense touring and creative differences, the band went on hiatus in 1992.
In 2003, Europe reunited with their classic lineup: Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), John Levén (bass), Mic Michaeli (keyboards), and Ian Haugland (drums). Since their comeback, they have released several critically acclaimed albums, including Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015), and Walk the Earth (2017). Their newer work shows a heavier, blues-inspired sound with mature songwriting while staying true to their rock roots.
