Born in a family of scholars, Bulleh Shah’s father was a learned man, a maulvi, Bulleh Shah also became a respected scholar over time. But he longed for true inner realization. In his intense search for his Maste,r he headed towards Lahore where Shah Inayat lived.
This verse is about his quest for truth and the simplicity of finding it within that Shah Inayat reveals to Bulleh Shah. The baselessness of caste and society of this world and the conditioning that people believed in, is what kept the divine away.
Performed in our first edit of this series at The Royal Opera House Mumbai, vocalist Radhika Sood Nayak does justice to the verse in her expression.
"Haroof" by ALSO | ideas content design, is bringing baithaks back, right into the discerning public domain with a contemporary twist. The idea is to create a community of discerning music lovers through curated evenings that celebrate saaz-o-mausiqui. Haroof is to Urdu what Alphabet is to English, its these hard, which when strung together make a verse which in turn, forms a bandish or ghazal.
We are a lyrical collective of people in music who work with a desire to promote hindustani gayaki across genres and bring them to a performing arts environment across the country, to give new artists and vocalists the stage that they so deserve.
