How to apply & why to do Research before Residency

Research is a very important tool for match applicants to strengthen their CV for competitive specialties or to cover weak areas in their CV e.g. low scores, previous attempts. It is best to it after you have given your step exams or at least step 1. There are 2 main methods to apply for research. The less common method is the formal process which involves applying through institutions website if they have advertised open spots for research. The more common method is the backdoor process which involves looking for faculty in top institutions and sending them an email asking them for available spots. It can take around 6-18 months to get a spot and usually sending out 1000 emails might only get you around 2-3 positive responses from faculty.
