Investors are broadly classified under following categories:

(i) Retail Individual Investors (RIIs)

‘Retail individual investor’ means an investor who applies or bids for securities of or for a value of not more than Rs. 2,00,000.


(ii)  Non Institutional Investors (NIIs)

All applicants, other than QIBs or individuals .


(iii) Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) :-

QIBs are investment institutions who buy the shares of a company on a large scale. QIBs are those institutional investors who are perceived to possess expertise and the financial strength to evaluate and invest in the capital markets.




◆◆ QUALIFIED INSTITUTIONAL BUYERS
(QIBs )

According to Regulation 2(1)(ss) of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Issue of Capital and Disclosure
Requirements) Regulations, 2018, Qualified Institutional Buyer comprises of —

(i) a mutual fund, venture capital fund, Alternative Investment Fund and foreign venture capital investor
registered with SEBI;

(ii) a foreign portfolio investor other than Category III foreign portfolio investor, registered with SEBI;

(iii) a public financial institution as defined in Section 2(72) of
the Companies Act, 2013;

(iv) a scheduled commercial bank;

(v) a multilateral and bilateral development financial institution;

(vi) a state industrial development corporation;


(vii) an insurance company registered with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority;


(viii) a provident fund with minimum corpus of twenty five crore rupees;


(ix) a pension fund with minimum corpus of twenty five crore rupees;

(x) National Investment Fund set up by the Government of India;

(xi) insurance funds set up and managed by army, navy or air force of the Union of India;


(xii) insurance funds set up and managed by the Department of Posts, India;

(xiii) systemically important non-banking financial companies.
