Sierra snow could boost Truckee ski season and local businesses

Описание: The first of two snowstorms has arrived in the Sierra near Donner Summit, bringing fresh snow after a mostly dry stretch since the holidays. Conditions shifted from sleet to snow near Interstate 80, marking a significant change in a winter season many in Truckee have described as unusually quiet.

February typically brings deep snowbanks to the Sierra, but this year bare ground has been common. Visitors hoping to snowboard and local businesses dependent on ski tourism say the lack of snow slowed activity during what is usually a busy time.

Employees at Tahoe Dave’s Skis & Boards in Truckee say the incoming storms could provide a much-needed boost to business and help improve Sierra snow totals. Local historian Greg Zirbel noted the stark contrast to previous winters when snow reached more than a dozen feet high.
As the Sierra snowstorm moves through Donner Summit, the California Highway Patrol is urging drivers heading into the mountains to slow down, allow extra time and carry chains as road conditions change along I-80.

With another system expected behind this one, many in Truckee are hopeful the storms could help turn the winter season around.
