Shomari Figures (born September 3, 1985) is the U.S. Representative for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. A member of the Democratic Party, he assumed office on January 3, 2025, following a historic election in a newly redrawn majority-Black district.
Before his election to Congress, Figures served in significant roles across all three branches of the federal government:
He most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. He previously served as the White House liaison to Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
During the Obama administration, he was the Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel, where he helped implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
He served as Legislative Counsel to U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, advising on issues such as civil rights, immigration, and policing.
A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, he began his legal career as a law clerk on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Figures holds positions on two influential committees that align with the needs of his district:
Serves on the subcommittees for Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development and Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture.
Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure: Serves on the subcommittees for Highways and Transit and Water Resources and Environment.
Figures has focused his first term on infrastructure, healthcare, and economic stability:
He has been a vocal advocate for struggling rural hospitals, recently securing $1 million for infrastructure at the Jackson Medical Center in Alabama.
He has led floor debates on bipartisan maritime bills and the ESTUARIES Act to protect coastal waterways like Mobile Bay.
He recently introduced the Baby Sleep Tax Relief Act and the First-Time Parents Tax Credit Act.
Figures comes from a prominent Alabama political family:
The late Michael Figures, a state senator and civil rights attorney famous for a 1981 lawsuit that bankrupted the United Klans of America.
Vivian Davis Figures, who has served in the Alabama State Senate since 1996, succeeding her husband.
He is married to Dr. Kalisha Dessources Figures, an impact strategist; they have children together.
