Last night at 25°F, the gas nozzle wouldn’t go into my 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L. It felt like something was blocking the capless fuel filler, and I couldn’t refuel at all.
The next day, when the temperature rose to 32°F, I checked again and discovered that solid ice was blocking the capless fuel filler mechanism. I used a screwdriver and pliers to carefully push the capless fuel filler, which cleared the ice blockage. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take a video during the actual fix.
I also found out that the dealer was charging $100 just to diagnose the issue, so I was really happy to figure it out myself and save the money.
Good news—it’s now working properly, and I can finally fill up gas without any issues.
I’m sharing this in case it helps other Honda Pilot owners dealing with cold-weather fueling problems, especially when the gas nozzle won’t go in. Cold temperatures can cause moisture to freeze inside the capless fuel filler, making it seem stuck or blocked.
⚠️ Disclaimer: Be careful when attempting any DIY fix to avoid damaging the fuel filler components.
