In this episode, I respond to a viewer's question about choosing when to practice new material. We can use the “spaced repetition method” and “interleaving practice” to keep our practice feeling fresh AND to boost our music retention.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this episode, I respond to a comment from one of my viewers.
They asked a couple of questions that many aspiring musicians often struggle with.
In this video, I explain two powerful practice concepts that could change how you think about practicing forever.
The official terms for these two concepts are “spaced repetition method” and “interleaving practice.”
Studies show that these methods can double or even triple the retention of practiced skills or learned knowledge.
If you don't already know about the spaced repetition method or interleaving practice, you'll definitely want to hear this.
I hope you enjoy this lesson and find it beneficial.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks! :)

Spaced Repetition:
Cepeda et al. (2006) conducted a comprehensive study that found 200-300% improved retention rates with spaced repetition. Their meta-analysis titled "Spacing Effects in Learning: A Temporal Ridgeline of Optimal Retention" highlights this enhancement of long-term memory compared to massed learning methods.
[Source: Cepeda, N. J., Pashler, H., Vul, E., Wixted, J. T., & Rohrer, D. (2006)].
Interleaving Practice:
Taylor & Rohrer (2010) showed that learners who used interleaved practice performed 1.5 to 2 times better on tests than those who practiced in blocked sequences in their research paper titled "The Benefits of Interleaved Practice for Learning".
[Source: Taylor, K., & Rohrer, D. (2010)].
Another study, Kornell & Bjork (2008), demonstrated improvements of up to 76% in final performance when learners used interleaving practice compared to blocked practice. Their work, "Learning Concepts and Categories: Is Spacing the 'Enemy of Induction'?," provides a detailed analysis.
