For over 400 years the economy & culture of Gloucester & its surrounding communities on Cape Ann have been largely defined by the maritime industry. In the first half of the 20th century, a confluence of seminal events made Gloucester the center of global attention. During World War II, the rise of immigrant populations, coupled with innovations in shipbuilding design & manufacturing to meet fast-growing consumer markets, made Gloucester the most invaluable fishing port in the free world. One surviving vessel from this era exemplifies the evolution of our working waterfront. This is the story of Gloucester’s Fishing Heyday, featuring the Evelina M. Goulart.
