The 2016 NYIAS was a damn good show. I originally went to see the Cadillac CT6 and XT5 because I'd had my heart set on replacing my mom's Cadillac STS AWD 2009.
The XT5 was exactly what I expected: a updated SRX with a new face.
The CT6 disappointed me. On the one had, the heated/cooled/massage chairs, video rear view mirror, and infotainment front/rear package was impressive, the car felt "unfinished" and many cuts to the car felt *cheap*. The plastic in some parts of the car failed to feel as solid as Mercedes' or even Hyundai's.
Speaking of Hyundai...
Hyundai had a good show. Their cars and concept cars got tremendous exposure today and will make non-badge-conscious Millenials interested. Some of them looks like crosses between Jaguars and Aston Martins. Their large cars taking on a BMW or Mercedes profile at first glance.
LINCOLN truly suprised me with a Navigator concept in cornflower blue and dripping with chrome that featured massive gull-wing doors. Though the chances of it being built are 0%, the very thought that it might be was interesting. Unfortunarely the Lincoln Continental was unavailable for experiencing and the beautiful Black Label colors were hidden behind guarded doors of a concierge. Their handful of crossovers and the MKS were easy to overlook int he shadow of cornflower blue.
DODGE and CHRYSLER had a great show: Hellcat Charger, Hellcat Challenger and the new Chrysler Pacifica with an infotainment center that will let kids play games between destinations. Unfortunately, due to SRT being dissolved and SRT products falling under the Dodge brand, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT in its Maroon Wine glory was hidden in the basement where onlookers may or may not have even noticed it.
ALL SRT PRODUCTS NEED TO BE TOGETHER just like they were in the 2014 show.
And then there's the Chrysler 300 with no more SRT trim which still managed to look glorious in its 300s trim - including the duckbill spoiler I coveted on my 2012.
MERCEDES killed the luxury section of the show. The new E-class offering enough space and opulence to allow buyers S-class levels of luxury without S-class length and S-class $110,000+ price tags.
Jaguar and Land Rover inspired with their racing seats, bold colors and crossovers/SUV's expensive, foreign, exoticness.
The same can be said of Maserati, Alfa Romeo and to a lesser extent Porsche and Audi.
Mini, Scion and Mitsubishi occupied the rear of the show - tucked away in an area not likely to be ventured, cared about or remembered.
