Thursday 30th June saw a 'Steam Dreams' 'Cathedral's Express' excursion from London to Swanage but with a different itinery to the normal runs by either the 'Railway Touring Company' or 'UK Railtours'.
Most Swanage-bound excursions run with either two locomotives with working each leg or one loco taking the outward run with a diesel working the train back as far as Southampton before the loco runs the final leg back to London via Romsey and Andover. But this trip had almost a bit of both.
The outward leg of the trip was hauled by SR unrebuilt 'Battle of Britain'-class 4-6-2 No.34067 "Tangmere". After arriving and a short break, the 'Bullied' then left the Swanage Railway with its Support Coach and ran tender-first to Salisbury via Southampton, Eastleigh and Romsey. Then an hour later, the 'Cathedral's Express' followed "Tangmere" hauled by the second locomotive: Carnforth's LMSR 8F-class 2-8-0 No.48151 "Gauge O' Guild". Finally, after the 8F had arrived at Salisbury with the train and another short break, "Tangmere" rejoined the train and returned it to London.
This video shows "Tangmere" and its Support Coach passing through Totton on their way to Salisbury.
