The protagonist and his wife had attended an event in the village of his wife—Ritu’s—ancestral home. On their way back, someone—or perhaps a group of people—began following them in the darkness. Gripped by an inexplicable terror, they hurriedly made their way toward the river ghat. There, the boatman reassured them; however, as time passed—and before the boatman could reach the opposite bank—a storm suddenly erupted in the middle of the river. Yet, it seemed as though some invisible force intervened to rescue the protagonist and his wife from that calamity. Upon reaching the shore, while traveling home by car, they encountered a mysterious stranger. Subsequently—while his wife lay asleep—this stranger began subjecting the protagonist to a series of bizarre, supernatural occurrences. Eventually, the protagonist found himself—still in a state of slumber—lying beneath a tree by the roadside; it was then that his wife revealed to him the true identity of that mysterious stranger, and how the terrifying truth of that man's life was inextricably intertwined with the history of her own family.
